Date and Cashew Smoothie

Every time my mother visits from Morocco she brings syrupy, succulent Moroccan dates that I love. How she manages to “smuggle” fresh produce through customs, I’m not sure. It could be the fact that she doesn’t understand English and says no to every question they ask her, or it could be simply because she’s cute. Who wants to hassle a sweet, chubby, foreign grandmother after all.

Long story short, I woke up with plans for these dates this morning. It’s the kind of thing that happens when you don’t have to hurry or go to work, and the leisurely atmosphere inspires you to do better with what you have. I thought my breakfast should be as unordinary as my day.

Date and Cashew Smoothie

1 serving

5 medium (or 3 large)dates, pitted
1/4 cup raw or roasted cashews or peanuts
1 1/2 cups milk
1/4 cup crushed ice
1 teaspoon honey (optional)

Soften the dates by microwaving them for 15 to 20 seconds. Add the dates, cashews, milk and ice to the container of a blender. Blend on high until very smooth. Strain the smoothie with a sieve into the serving glass. Taste and if necessary, sweeten with a teaspoon of honey and blend again.

Nisrine, that you so much for stopping by my blog and commenting. I am glad I found your blog. Very lovely and interesting. You live close to us also. How we wish we had your knowledge of the French language. We travel to France often, going again in one month, but speak very little. We have tried…at least we can read a menu.

I truly love dates and especially this scrumptious smoothie! I usually make banana date ones – next time I'll use nuts.

I have a bunch of California dates that are getting turned into a milk shake tomorrow. I've never had Moroccan dates since I can easily find local dates.

I love dates, I'm thinking cashew butter would work here well and maybe cardamom. Yum.
