Fruit Salad with Pomegranate Molasses

What does pomegranate molasses taste like? I would have answered “pomegranates” a few weeks ago. Now that I’ve tasted it, my answer will be a bit more elaborate. It tastes like pomegranates, of course, as well as molasses. It has that deep, grown-up flavor similar to espresso that makes food taste more sophisticated. But it’s not bitter and that makes it totally different in my eyes than regular molasses, which I haven’t managed to love yet even though I tried hard. It’s also a bit acidic which lightens the flavor and makes it suitable for both desserts and savory dishes. Delightful.

I loved pomegranate molasses in this fruit salad. In fact, I’ve tried it with different fruits already, and the result was delicious every time. So don’t worry if you don’t have any pistachios or apples handy. Whichever fruits you have will work for this. I used to mix my fruits with grenadine, but have stopped in my effort to go sugar-free. So this is an excellent alternative while still enjoying the taste of pomegranates. Not all pomegranate molasses is sugar-free but, Cortas, the brand I used has only one ingredient: concentrated pomegranate juice.

I bought pomegranate molasses at the local Middle Eastern market (it is available in most Middle Eastern markets) but they also sell it at Whole Foods and online, of course.

Fruit Salad with Pomegranate Molasses

2 servings

2 apples, peeled, cored and cut into bite-sized cubes
2 tablespoons raisins
2 tablespoons pistachios or walnuts, coarsely chopped
3 tablespoons pomegranate molasses, plus more for drizzling
1/2 tablespoon honey (optional)
A dash of cinnamon (optional)

Combine all of the ingredients in a mixing bowl. Transfer to serving plates and drizzle with pomegranate molasses. Chill if you wish.

A couple of serving suggestions for this salad:
-Cold or at room temperature.
-On top of warm or cold cereal.
-As a side dish.

I recently found pomegranate molasses at a Middle Eastern store and then noticed that they carry the same brand at Whole Foods … for about twice the price, lol. This looks like a lovely use for it, so fragrant. Happy New Year!!!

Trix, I bought it at the Middle Esatern market for 3 or $4. I'm not sure how much it is at Whole Foods.

There is always a bottle of pomegranate molasses in our fridge (nar ekşisi in Turkish). We just love the stuff. Great on grilled fish and salads too. I've never had it on a fruit salad though. I'll have to try it.
    Happy New Year! :)

I have heard wonderful things about pomegranate molasses but have yet to try it. Now that I know Whole Foods carries it, I will have to get some next time I'm in the store.

Thank you so much for your visit :) I'm signing up to get your post via email.

I love pomegranate molasses as well . I never used it on fruit salads but I can see this working, I usually love it on savoury ones. I find it better than most balsamic vinegar and it is so much cheaper.

I made my own pomegranate molasses, which was much easier than I originally thought. You've given me a great idea on how to use the rest.
You have a beautiful blog, and the cuisine you showcase is very new to me. I look forward to learning more.

Salam, delicious and fancy. I loved this salad. Made it exactly as written with Granny smith apples, Thompson Sunmaid raisins, chopped walnuts, Cortas pomegranate molasses & the optional creamed honey. I plan to make this for DH to try insha Allah.
