Colorful Scenes from the Old Marché de Guéliz
Le marché de Guéliz, an indoor-outdoor grocery market in the heart of downtown Marrakesh has been iconic for decades. Anyone who’s ever lived there probably has a hint of an emotional tie to it. While everything around it modernized, it remained as it was 50 years ago. Its time has arrived, though. In the last few years, it has been moved to a temporary location while its new one is being built in an ultra modern setting at the base of a high rise. The Marrakchis protested its demolition but financial appeal was much stronger than the desire for historic preservation. Below are pictures of it before the move. Alas, I doubt the new one will have live chicken or pets.
Glad I took pictures!

Those flowers are beautiful. I love old, traditional markets. So sad when they get modernised, but at least they're not closing completely :-)

Your photos are a feast for the eyes. Thanks for the little trip back in time. I totally get the emotional tie to a marketplace. I sometimes yearn to turn back the clock and have one last visit at the Atwater Market in Montreal, Canada, before its gentrification. It holds such fond memories of a time past, shopping with my parents on Saturday mornings. It's just not the same today.

What lovely photos. I enjoy strolling food markets around the world. Morocco had some great sights in their markets.

At least you got to preserve your memories on film … things just keep changing all over, and it feels like it's almost never for the best these days : ( So sad when something with such character and history gets demolished for something new and shiny

Such great photos…and I agree with Trix. Hopefully some of the charm and allure will live on in the more modern location through the
patrons :)

What beautiful photos! Outdoor markets are so much fun, and also a lost art here in the States. Whenever I go back home to Puerto Rico, I can still get a taste of outdoor markets and quioscos to buy homemade roadside noms. I hope to one day be able to see Marrakesh, even if the market is a little less of what it was before the move. Thank you for sharing these photos from your trip!
