How to Cut and Peel a Watermelon
Cutting watermelon is like going to the Olympics. It’s an act of bravery and has more losers than winners. I am one of those people who buys pre-sliced watermelon. My best friend is one of those people. My nextdoor neighbor too. It’s embarrassing to be one of them out of fear, to admit that I totally dread seeing a whole watermelon, a cutting board and a shiny knife together in one place.
If you are one of them too, reader, rejoice. With these simple steps, you and I are henceforth watermelon cutting champions.
Using a large knife, cut the watermelon in half, crosswise.
For each half, cut off the top.
Secure the watermelon with one hand. Use a sharp knife to cut off the rind from top to bottom.
Cut into four wedges, lengthwise.
Slice each wedge into 1-inch slices.

I feel like I am always at war with watermelon when it comes to cutting it. The counter gets soaked with the juice, always lose a nail or two in the process. Your way looks safer :)

Lack of knowledge is definitely the reason why I don't buy fresh watermelon often. Now I have no excuse!

I always waste so much of the watermelon when I cut it and now I see why! This looks much easier, so thanks :)

Thank you for this tutorial – although we don't get much watermelon over here it's still so useful for holiday. And you make it look so easy!

This isn't really related to this post, but I recently discovered your website and have loved exploring it! Your recipes remind me of the way my father, who was born in Marrakesh, and his family cook. Of course, all those recipes we make only on rare special occasions or which he cooks just from the feel, it's great ot have a recipe for! I can't wait to start cooking my way through your blog.
