Healthy Homemade Chocolate Spread + Giveaway

I’ve eaten so many different brands of chocolate spread in my life, I can hardly remember the names. A few that I still recall from growing up in another country are Nusticao and Nocilla (pronounced noceeya). The half dark half white chocolate kind was always in our pantry, and as a kid I faithfully went for the white because it was sweeter. Now even the dark is too sweet for me. How times have changed.

This recipe is for all the Nutella lovers out there who would rather have a healthier, less cloying version. It is such an easy treat and made with quality ingredients. The only trouble you’ll have is keeping away from it.

P.S. I took the pictures while the chocolate was still warm but it does thicken into a rich, perfectly spreadable pâte à tartiner after a few hours.

HEALTHY CHOCOLATE SPREAD RECIPE

Yield: about 2 cups

Total Time: 10 MIN

This is recipe is wonderful not just as a spread but also as a filling for tarts, cupcakes, etc.

Ingredients:

8 ounces unsweetened chocolate, cut into squares
¾ cup honey
1/2 cup hazelnut, almond or peanut butter
1/2 cup coconut oil
½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

Place all the ingredients in a large microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 2 ½ to 3 minutes, at 30-second intervals, until the chocolate is melted. Gently stir to combine. Let cool 5 minutes and transfer into jars with a tight-fitting lid. Let sit in a cool place 4 to 6 hours before eating.

Good for up to a week.

    [smiling] I normally keep a wide berth from such spreads, especially Nutella with its 60% fat + sugar! Have read and reread your recipe and I have to admit to using all these ingredients separately: so perchance it would be fun to make and good for self-discipline as far as consumption is concerned :) !

    Love it! I always am happy to get new recipes for spreads to put on my kids’ sandwiches for school/sports activities…
